How Resit & Remedial Eligibility Works

A resit (supplementary) examination gives students who narrowly failed a module the opportunity to resubmit or re-sit the assessment. However, eligibility is conditional — most institutions require students to have met a minimum attendance threshold and completed all prerequisite coursework before granting a resit seat.

This checker applies your configurable policy — passing grade threshold, minimum attendance percentage, and prerequisite requirement — to each module row and produces a clear Eligible / Not Eligible verdict with the specific reason, so exam coordinators can process cases without manually reviewing each file.

Common Eligibility Criteria

  • Grade below passing threshold — Only students who failed (scored below the passing grade) are candidates. Students who already passed are automatically excluded.
  • Minimum attendance met — Attendance below 75% (a common threshold) typically disqualifies students even if their grade was borderline — they did not engage sufficiently with the module.
  • Prerequisites complete — Students must have passed all prerequisite modules before attempting the module in question, preventing progression without foundational knowledge.
  • Within resit window — Most institutions limit resit opportunities to one or two attempts within the current academic year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a resit and a supplementary exam?

The terms are used interchangeably at many institutions but some distinguish them: a "resit" refers to repeating a failed exam, while a "supplementary" exam may be offered even for marginal passes or as a grade improvement attempt. This tool covers both under configurable grade-range eligibility rules.

What happens if a student fails their resit?

Most institutions require the student to repeat the module in the next academic year. Repeated failures may trigger academic probation or suspension. Some programmes cap the total number of resit attempts permitted across the entire degree.

Does this tool send any official eligibility notification to students?

No — this is a planning and calculation tool only. Export the PDF report and share it through your institution's official channels. All official eligibility decisions must go through your academic registry or examination board.

Can I check eligibility for multiple students at once?

This tool checks one student's module set at a time. For bulk processing of a full cohort, UniCloud360's Exam Management module automates resit eligibility checks for all registered students simultaneously and integrates with your timetable and grade book.
