GPA Calculator for Singapore Universities: NUS, NTU & SMU

Singapore’s universities run on grade point systems that look similar from a distance but differ in the details that matter. The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) use a 5.0 scale, while Singapore Management University (SMU) uses a 4.0 scale — and each institution publishes its own grade point table. If you are calculating your GPA for a transcript, a graduate application, or a job application in Singapore, the scale and table must match your university exactly. The UniCloud360 GPA & CGPA Calculator is built for that precision — it is free, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no login for core calculation.

NUS grading system: the 5.0 scale

NUS operates on a 5.0 scale where an A+ and an A both carry 5.0 grade points, A- carries 4.5, B+ carries 4.0, B carries 3.5, B- carries 3.0, C+ carries 2.5, C carries 2.0, D+ carries 1.5, D carries 1.0, and F carries 0. The cap at 5.0 — with no grade above it — is the defining feature of the NUS system. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is cumulative, credit-weighted across the entire degree, and NUS publishes both the semester GPA and the cumulative average on the transcript. Because honours classification, scholarship eligibility, and exchange placements all anchor to the CAP (Cumulative Average Point, the NUS term for CGPA), calculating it correctly matters at every stage of the degree.

NTU grading system: similar scale, different vocabulary

NTU also uses a 5.0 scale with grade points that mirror NUS closely: A+ and A at 5.0, A- at 4.5, B+ at 4.0, B at 3.5, B- at 3.0, C+ at 2.5, C at 2.0, D+ at 1.5, D at 1.0, and F at 0. NTU calls the cumulative average the CGPA, and it is computed as the credit-weighted average across all graded modules. The subtle differences from NUS — how pass/fail modules are treated, how retakes are counted, and which modules are excluded from the CGPA — make it essential to use the exact NTU academic regulations rather than assuming the two universities are identical.

SMU grading system: the 4.0 scale

SMU differs from NUS and NTU by using a 4.0 scale. At SMU, an A+ carries 4.0 (with some courses granting 4.3 for exceptional performance), an A carries 4.0, an A- carries 3.7, a B+ carries 3.3, a B carries 3.0, a B- carries 2.7, a C+ carries 2.3, a C carries 2.0, a D carries 1.0, and an F carries 0. The SMU GPA is cumulative and credit-weighted, and the university publishes the official grade point table in its academic policies. Because the scale is 4.0 rather than 5.0, an SMU GPA cannot be directly compared with an NUS or NTU GPA — the same performance produces a 4.0-scale number that looks lower, which is precisely why a scale-aware calculator matters.

How to calculate your Singapore GPA

The arithmetic is consistent across all three universities once the scale is set:

  1. List every module with its credit units and letter grade.
  2. Convert each letter grade to grade points using your university’s published table.
  3. Multiply each module’s grade points by its credit units and sum the weighted points.
  4. Divide by the total credit units — that is your GPA for the term.
  5. For the cumulative average, repeat across every module in your degree.

Worked example at NUS on the 5.0 scale: a 4-credit A (5.0 × 4 = 20), a 3-credit B+ (4.0 × 3 = 12), and a 3-credit A- (4.5 × 3 = 13.5) give 45.5 weighted points over 10 credits — a GPA of 4.55.

Why the right scale and table matter

The gap between university policies is not cosmetic. A module graded B+ at NUS earns 4.0 points; at a university using a 3.3 for B+, the same transcript line would carry a different weight. Similarly, a 4.0 at NUS (5.0 scale) is a strong but not perfect result, while a 4.0 at SMU (4.0 scale) is a perfect average. Any calculator that forces your transcript into a generic 4.0 or 5.0 template will produce a number that does not match your official GPA. The calculator’s configurable grade tables let you select the NUS, NTU, or SMU table (or any other institution’s) and compute accurately across every module.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my NUS GPA?

Use the NUS 5.0 scale: multiply each module’s grade points by its credit units, sum the weighted points, and divide by total credit units. The calculator applies the NUS table automatically when selected.

What GPA scale does NTU use?

NTU uses a 5.0 scale — A+ and A at 5.0, A- at 4.5, B+ at 4.0, and so on — with the cumulative CGPA computed as a credit-weighted average across all graded modules.

Does SMU use a 5.0 or 4.0 scale?

SMU uses a 4.0 scale. An A+ carries 4.0 (4.3 for exceptional work in some modules), an A carries 4.0, an A- carries 3.7, and the GPA is cumulative and credit-weighted.

What is the CAP at NUS?

The CAP — Cumulative Average Point — is NUS’s term for the cumulative GPA. It is the credit-weighted average across your entire degree and is the number used for honours classification and scholarship eligibility.

Is the Singapore GPA calculator free?

Yes. NUS, NTU, and SMU grade tables, credit-weighted GPA and CGPA calculation, what-if planning, and CSV import and export are all free and need no login.

Final thought

Singapore’s universities share a region but not a grading system — NUS and NTU on 5.0, SMU on 4.0, with different tables, vocabularies, and policies. A GPA only means something when the right scale and table are applied to it. Select your university’s system in the calculator, enter your modules once, and keep every average honest from the first semester to the final transcript.
