Why Weighted Grading Matters

Most school assessments are not a simple average — they are weighted to reflect the relative importance of each component. A final exam might count for 40% of the grade while weekly homework counts for 10%. Without a weighted calculation, raw averages misrepresent student achievement and can lead to inaccurate grade reporting.

The Free Assignment Grading Calculator handles weighted grading automatically. Enter each component — homework, midterm, project, final exam — with its score, maximum marks, and percentage weight. The tool instantly calculates the overall weighted percentage, converts it to a letter grade using your chosen scale, shows the GPA equivalent, and flags whether the student has passed.

Three grading scales included

  • US A–F with +/− — the standard 13-tier scale from A+ (97–100) to F, with GPA equivalents from 0.0 to 4.0.
  • UK Honours Degree — First Class, Upper Second (2:1), Lower Second (2:2), Third, and Fail, with standard percentage thresholds.
  • Simple A–F / Pass–Fail — streamlined scales for schools that don't use +/− modifiers or only need a binary outcome.

Common Questions

Free Assignment Grading Calculator — FAQ

How does weighted grading work?
Each component contributes to the final grade in proportion to its weight. If a midterm exam has a weight of 30%, a student who scores 80% on it contributes 80 × 0.30 = 24 points to the final grade. The sum of all weighted contributions gives the overall percentage.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The tool shows a warning if your component weights do not sum to exactly 100%. The grade calculation is still shown, but the result will not be accurate until weights total 100%. Adjust individual component weights until the sum indicator shows 100%.
Which grading scale should I use?
Choose US A–F for North American schools using letter grades with +/− modifiers. Choose UK Honours for university degree classifications. Use Simple A–F for schools without modifiers, or Pass/Fail for binary assessment outcomes.
Can I calculate grades for multiple students?
This tool calculates one student's grade at a time. For class-wide grading, change the student name and scores for each student and download a separate PDF report for each. For bulk grading across a whole class, UniCloud360 Grade Book processes all students simultaneously.
Is the grading calculator free?
Yes — completely free with no login required. All data stays in your browser session and nothing is uploaded to any server.

"I use this to cross-check my grade book calculations before submitting. The visual breakdown helps me spot immediately if a student's poor exam performance is being masked by strong coursework — or vice versa."

"We shared this with all our teachers at the start of the semester as a quick reference tool. The pass/fail threshold indicator is particularly useful for our school's minimum grade policy."
