How credit transfer evaluation works

Credit transfer evaluation is the process by which a receiving institution assesses courses completed at another institution and determines which credits — if any — will be recognised toward the student's programme at the new institution.

Most institutions apply two primary filters: a minimum grade threshold (e.g., only courses passed at grade B or above are eligible) and a maximum credit cap (e.g., no more than 90 credits may be transferred in). Courses below the grade threshold or in excess of the cap are rejected regardless of their content.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Capped" mean in the transfer results?

A "Capped" course passes the grade threshold but cannot be accepted because doing so would exceed the institution's maximum transferable credit limit. Capped courses are otherwise eligible — they are excluded only due to the credit cap. Students may appeal for cap exceptions in some institutions, particularly for specialisation courses in the major.

How are course categories used in transfer decisions?

Category classification (Core Requirement, Major Elective, General Education, Free Elective) determines how an accepted credit is applied toward degree requirements. A "Core Requirement" credit from another institution may only be accepted as an elective substitute rather than satisfying the core directly — this depends on the receiving institution's equivalency mapping, which admissions officers typically review case-by-case.

Should I include failed courses (grade F) in the evaluation?

Yes — include them to see the full picture. Failed courses are automatically rejected and appear in the results with the reason noted. This mirrors the standard admissions review process where all transcript entries are evaluated, even those that do not transfer, to assess the student's full academic history.

Can this tool be used to compare policies across institutions?

Yes — change the minimum grade and credit cap settings and click Evaluate again to see how the same transcript performs under a different institutional policy. This is useful for prospective students comparing their options, or for admissions teams benchmarking their policy against peer institutions.
