Common Questions

Free FAFSA Prep Checklist — FAQ

What is the FAFSA and who should complete it?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the US government form used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid — including Pell Grants, subsidised loans, work-study, and many state and institutional awards. Any US student (or eligible non-citizen) planning to attend college or university should complete the FAFSA each year they want financial aid.
What is dependency status and how does it affect my checklist?
Dependent students must provide both their own financial information and their parent's or guardian's information. Independent students — typically over 24, married, veterans, graduate students, or those with dependents of their own — only need to provide their own (and spouse's if married) financial information. Your dependency status determines which sections of the FAFSA checklist apply to you.
What tax year does the FAFSA use?
The FAFSA uses prior-prior year (PPY) tax data. For the 2025–26 FAFSA, you will use 2023 federal tax returns. For 2026–27, you use 2024 returns. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) within the FAFSA can pull your tax data automatically, which speeds up processing and reduces errors.
What is an FSA ID and why is it needed?
The Federal Student Aid ID is the username and password used to log in to the FAFSA and electronically sign it. Both the student and at least one parent (if the student is dependent) need separate FSA IDs linked to their own SSN and email address. Create yours at studentaid.gov before starting the FAFSA.
What if I am an eligible non-citizen?
Eligible non-citizens — including permanent residents, refugees, people with T or U visas, and certain others — can qualify for federal financial aid. The checklist adds your Alien Registration Number (A-Number) and relevant visa/residency documentation when you select this option. Undocumented students (without DACA or eligible status) do not qualify for federal FAFSA aid but may be eligible for state-level aid in some states.
Can I use this checklist if I am a non-traditional or independent student?
Yes — select Independent from the dependency status dropdown to hide parent-related sections and add spouse documentation if you are married. The checklist also includes sections for veterans, foster youth, homeless students, and disability recipients based on the Special Circumstances checkboxes you select.

"I had no idea what the FAFSA even needed until I used this. Being able to check off items as I found them meant I didn't panic when I sat down to actually fill it out — everything was ready."

"I send this link to every senior in October. It cuts the time we spend in FAFSA prep sessions by half because students show up having already gathered most of their documents. The PDF is great for families to take home."

"The dependent vs. independent toggle is exactly what I needed — I aged out of foster care so I'm independent, and the checklist adjusted automatically to not ask for parent info. Saved a lot of confusion."

"Particularly useful for eligible non-citizens who often miss the alien registration number section. Having it explicitly called out in the checklist before they sit down to complete the FAFSA prevents a lot of last-minute delays."
