Common Questions

Free Net Price Calculator — FAQ

What is net price and how is it different from sticker price?
The sticker price (or published price) is the full cost of attendance — tuition, fees, room and board, books, transport, and personal expenses combined. Net price is the sticker price minus all gift aid (grants and scholarships). It represents what a student actually needs to pay or borrow. Net price does not subtract loans or work-study, because those must be repaid or earned — they are not free money.
What counts as gift aid vs self-help aid?
Gift aid includes anything the student does not have to repay or work for: federal Pell and SEOG grants, state grants, institutional merit or need-based scholarships, private scholarships, and tuition waivers. Self-help aid includes federal and private loans (which must be repaid with interest) and work-study awards (which must be earned through employment). Only gift aid reduces the net price; self-help aid reduces the remaining balance the student must cover but adds future obligations.
Why do US colleges have to publish a net price calculator?
Under the Higher Education Act (as amended by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008), every college receiving federal financial aid must post a net price calculator on its website. The goal is to let prospective students estimate their true cost before applying, enabling better comparison shopping across institutions. This tool helps advisors and students replicate that calculation with any institution's data.
What is 'net cost after all aid' shown in the metrics?
This is the total cost of attendance minus all aid — gift aid AND self-help aid (loans and work-study). It shows what remains after every source of funding is applied. Note that this amount is not the same as net price: the gap still needs to be covered, either by a student/parent contribution, additional borrowing, or savings. Use it to understand total cash needed, but remember the self-help portion carries future obligations.
Should I include a work-study award in the aid total?
Yes, enter your work-study award under Self-Help Aid. The tool keeps it separate from gift aid so your net price calculation remains accurate. Work-study reduces the remaining balance, but only if the student actually works and earns those hours — it is not guaranteed income.
Can I use this calculator for international students or non-US institutions?
Yes. The currency selector supports USD, GBP, EUR, INR, LKR, AUD, and CAD. The cost and aid categories are generic enough to work with most national systems — simply enter the local equivalents for each category. The underlying formula (CoA minus grant/scholarship aid = net price) applies universally.

"We use this during every prospective student meeting. The gift aid vs self-help split is exactly what families need to see — so many come in confused about why their award letter looks large but their actual cost is still high."

"The three-segment aid bar is worth the whole tool. I can show a student in 30 seconds why two offer letters with the same 'total aid' number can have very different net prices. No more confusion over loans vs grants."

"My advisor sent me this link before we met. I came to the appointment already knowing my net price and what I still needed to cover. The PDF let me compare three schools side by side at home."

"We're Canadian, so having CAD in the currency list was important. The breakdown table exports cleanly to our student record system via CSV. Saved my team hours of manual computation at enrollment time."
