Chronic Absenteeism — Theory & Formulas

The metrics powering this identifier

01
Absence Rate Formula
Rate = (Days Absent ÷ Total Days) × 100

Calculated per student against total instructional days in the term, including both excused and unexcused absences combined.

02
Absenteeism Classification
On Track: Rate < 7%
At Risk: 7% ≤ Rate < 10%
Chronic: 10% ≤ Rate < 20%
Severe: Rate ≥ 20%

Based on widely-used US Department of Education thresholds. Custom chronic and severe thresholds can be set per institution's policy.

03
Class Chronic Rate
Class Rate = Chronic Students ÷ Total Students × 100

A class chronic rate above 10% signals systemic barriers requiring school-wide intervention, not just individual student support plans.
